Firefox crashes on Vollaphone 22 on certain websites

After flashing I need to put the following user.js into ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default-release/ otherwise firefox crashes on certain websites (or all of them after a while?). I played around with the settings, but could narrow it down to disable webgl:

// Deactivate VA-API completely
// user_pref("media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled", false);
// user_pref("media.vaapi.enabled", false);
// user_pref("gfx.vaapi.enabled", false);

// Deactivate hardware acceleration
// user_pref("layers.acceleration.force-enabled", false);
// user_pref("gfx.webrender.all", false);
// user_pref("gfx.webrender.software", true);
// user_pref("layers.acceleration.disabled", true);

// Deactivate Overlay-Scrolling (might lead to crashes)
// user_pref("widget.gtk.overlay-scrolling.enabled", false);

// Deactivate GPU-processes (might lead to instabilities)
// user_pref("gfx.multiprocess.pipelining", false);
// user_pref("gfx.multiprocess.pipelining.force-enabled", false);

// Deactivate WebGL
user_pref("webgl.disabled", true);

// Reduce Memory Usage
user_pref("config.trim_on_minimize", true);
user_pref("browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory", true);

Any idea why WebGL is crashing Firefox?

On Volla Tablet, we are disabling the MEOW wrapper.

I have no clue if it works (not having a Vollaphone 22) myself, but would you mind trying that on your device too?

sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/droid-system-overlay/etc
echo "ro.hardware.egl=mali" >> /usr/lib/droid-system-overlay/etc/prop.halium

then reboot. Please ensure you have a way to enter into the system (ssh/devtools) if for some reason you could not load phosh anymore.

Thanks for the hint. I added the file with the setting. Phosh is running and loading normally afterwards after reboot, as far as I can tell. But if I open a new profile without disabling WebGL, firefox still crashes:

$ cat /usr/lib/droid-system-overlay/etc/prop.halium
ro.hardware.egl=mali

Would you mind trying with the droidian-quirks-firefox-gpu package installed?

sudo apt install droidian-quirks-firefox-gpu

then try a fresh profile.

Aah…that doesn’t go well. If I install droidian-quirks-firefox-gpu, firefox crashes immediately upon startup, independent of the chosen profile.

Hi !
And with installing droidian-quirks-firefox to ?

droidian-quirks-firefox is / was already pre-installed. If I try to purge it, it would also remove droidian-phosh-full. Presumably the latter is only a Meta-Package and nothing would happen so far, but I didn’t test it though.
